A great lesson / Uma lição

Me sintia um super homem.

When I started this trip, I though of it as something difficult and extraordinary. Most people would admire our courage, and be worried about the dangers involved. I felt like a superman. Well, this feeling started to fade away as we started to encounter people doing things much more extraordinary than our little adventure. For example when we saw in Bolivia, at 13000 ft/4000m., a Japanese couple, climbing a dirt road, full of loose rocks, with their bicycle fully loaded with camping gear. It also happened two days ago during the cross from the Chiloé Island to Chaiten, in Chile. We sat near a couple, her name was Tina, 35, from Denmark and he, Cedrik, 41 from Switzerland. Both are on a 5 month journey with their mountain bikes, crossing South America.
Tina told us how difficult it was to cross the Bolivian highlands, carrying their own food and water for 5 days across the arid and cold desert. After biking for 60 km, they would stop to camp, prepare their dinner and admire the stars… No internet, no air-conditioned or heating and no hot bath or any bath at all…
I know what is to be at 13.000 ft. We were dizzy just to change coats, imagine biking, prepare the tent, and make dinner…
From this moment on, I started to realize how ordinary our big “adventure” was.
That’s why, after riding for more than 10 hours thru loose gravel, lots of dust and muddy roads, I found it normal to sleep in a very small guest house, for just 8 usd instead of the usual $60 for the Holiday inns…
And for the first time in this trip, I was happy to collapse in my bed, exhausted, without taking a shower or brush my teeth. If the Tinas and Cedriks of the world can do it for 5 days, I can too, at least for one night…

tuas palavras e fotos proporcionam momentos especiais.
